Fritz-X/ FX 1400

The Fritz-X bomb, officially known as the FX 1400, was a German radio-controlled anti-ship missile used during World War II. It's often considered the world's first precision-guided weapon to be used in combat.

The Fritz-X was a 1,400 kg (3,100 lb) armor-piercing bomb with a unique design. It had a streamlined fuselage, a pointed nose, and four short wings with a wingspan of 1.22 meters (4 ft). At the tail, it had a box-like stabilizer unit containing the radio receiver and control surfaces. The operator, typically in a bomber like the Dornier Do 217, would track the bomb visually and steer it to its target using a joystick that transmitted radio signals to the missile's tail fins. The bomber had to fly at a constant altitude and speed, making it vulnerable to attack.

The Fritz-X was famously used to sink the Italian battleship Roma on September 9, 1943, marking a devastating display of the weapon's effectiveness. Two of the bombs hit the Roma, causing a massive explosion that broke the ship in half and sank it within minutes. It also successfully damaged the cruiser USS Philadelphia and the light cruiser HMS Uganda, demonstrating its potential to change naval warfare. However, the weapon was limited by its reliance on clear weather and the line of sight between the bomber and the target. Allied forces soon developed countermeasures, such as radio jamming, which severely limited its success in later campaigns.

Material & Prozess

We have deliberately chosen the FDM process to produce our models. For optimal results, the models are printed at high resolution with custom developed print profiles. This enables us to use bio- degradable materials with minimal waste and no involvement of toxic chemicals. A certain surface roughness is however inevitable. If desired, light sanding will help to improve surface finish.

For gluing, cyanoacrylate glue works well (not included).
