This is the absolutely stunning antique beaded evening bag as pictured. It has a wonderfully detailed celluloid frame with a monkey perched on the top holding what looks to be a nut or fruit. The frame has been beautifully carved with leaves and pinecones (or possibly pineapple inspired motifs) and really is the star of the show.
I believe this dates to around the Edwardian period (approximately 1905–1915), although I cannot guarantee this. There are no maker's marks anywhere that I can find. The only markings are the number 12, which is stamped into the celluloid frame in several places.
The front and back are decorated with intricate hand-beaded floral panels in lovely shades of pink, purple and olive green. It has a celluloid chain handle and a silk-lined interior.
Please note that this is an antique item and it has signs of age, use and wear commensurate with this.
The monkey's tail has had an old repair at some point in its life, which I have highlighted in my last photograph with a black arrow. There is also a stable crack to one side of the celluloid frame. It does not appear to go all the way through and the frame still feels solid, but I have photographed it clearly. I’ve marked it with a purple arrow in my second to last photo.
There is wear, some loose threads and areas of loss around the edges of the beadwork, together with age-related wear to the silk lining.
Please study all of my photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
When laid flat, the bag measures approximately 24.5cm across, 24.5cm high (excluding the chain) and the chain has a drop of approximately 14cm.
This is one of those items that really catches the eye.
Whether you are a collector of Art Nouveau accessories, antique handbags or simply appreciate beautifully made old things, it is a wonderful decorative piece with bags of character.
