ANTIQUE GLASS PLATE PHOTO NEGATIVE - This original glass plate negative captures a close-up view of the bow of the U.S. Navy protected cruiser USS New Orleans, photographed on July 23, 1899 in Newport, Rhode Island. The elaborate decorative shield and scrollwork with the ship’s name are clearly visible. The original paper sleeve is included and contains the photographer's handwritten notes:
“Newport, R.I. – July 23, 1899 – Cruiser New Orleans – Built in England for Brazil (named Amaronas) purchased by the U.S. early in 1898.”
Condition: The glass plate shows some scattered spots, light scratches, and minor edge wear typical of age. Overall exposure and contrast are very good, and the details of the bow decoration remain clear.
