Sterling Silver Sweetheart Brooch Badge 1899 Lifebuoy Royal Navy Second Boer War

A scarce late Victorian sterling silver Royal Navy lifebuoy sweetheart brooch or badge.

Hallmarked from Birmingham in 1899.

In wonderful condition and measures 32mm across.

While lifebuoy-shaped sweetheart brooches peaked during WWI, this brooch is a scarce, early predecessor made right at the turn of the century. During the Boer War, British Naval Brigades were deployed on land to provide heavy artillery support, driving a strong wave of naval pride back home.

The crown depicted is the late Victorian Imperial Crown, which looks very similar to the Tudor Crown but features slightly different detailing along the arches appropriate for the end of Queen Victoria's reign.

The 1899 hallmark confirms this is a genuine antique Victorian piece rather than a later wartime mass-production or reproduction.

Because this brooch dates definitively to 1899, it represents a rarer pre-WWI wave of patriotic sweetheart jewelry. Rather than referencing World War I, this piece was crafted to honor service in the Second Boer War (1899–1902), when Naval Brigades were famously deployed ashore with heavy naval guns to assist the British Army.
