Robertson Davies remains one of the most significant figures in 20th-century Canadian letters, celebrated worldwide for the Deptford Trilogy and later for The Rebel Angels, What's Bred in the Bone, and The Lyre of Orpheus. Murther & Walking Spirits opens Davies's unfinished Cornish Trilogy with one of the most striking premises in his body of work: the protagonist, Connor "Gil" Gilmartin, is murdered in the novel's very first sentence, and lingers as a ghost to observe a film festival — and, through it, the history of his own ancestors across centuries.
This is the specially bound limited issue, one of only 150 numbered copies of the first edition, signed by the author. The limitation page reads: "One of 150 numbered copies of the First Edition of Murther & Walking Spirits signed by the author and specially bound. No. 126," with Davies's signature over his printed name. This issue is bound in quarter cloth with marbled boards, distinct from the trade edition, and was produced without a dust jacket.
Near Fine throughout. Binding near fine; spine clean and square, gilt stamping sharp and bright. Marbled boards near fine, bright, no significant wear. A shallow stress indentation is visible across a small group of approximately nine leaves, diminishing in depth, consistent with a binding characteristic rather than external damage; no tears or creasing. Page block clean throughout, no foxing or marking. Limitation page present and intact, signed by Robertson Davies. No internal markings, stamps, or ownership inscriptions.
