Copperplate engraving, printed in black ink on laid paper with later hand colouring (probably 19th century). 

In a new conservation mount with backing sheet - ready to frame. 

Plate 35cms by 42.4cms, mount 43.3cm x 50.7cm.

The map is in fair original condition with fine detail and sympathetic hand colouring; an old repair upper left corner where part of the sheet was missing, a second to a tear along the fold upper right, some light age toning and soft creases to the sheet (see photos). Mount new (see photos). As always, condition is already reflected in the price.

Emmanuel Bowen c.1693-1767

One of the leading 18th-century map and print sellers and engravers in London. Appointed Engraver of maps to George II of England and Louis XV of France. His apprentices included Thomas Kitchin and Thomas Jeffreys. He collaborated with other map makers of his time, including the Bowles family and John Owen. Along with Thomas Kitchin and his son, Thomas Bowen, he produced some of the finest maps and atlases of the period. His recognition was such that he was appointed Geographer to both George II of Great Britain and Louis XV of France. Despite his many achievements, however, he never enjoyed lasting financial success and died in great poverty.
