Major Arthur Griffiths (1838-1908) was a British soldier who began his career as a young boy fighting in the Crimean War. He later became an Inspector of Prisons, and wrote sensational, exciting and grotesque accounts of prison life and of crime in general. He is a brilliant and compelling writer whose works are now hard to find.

A very nice example of the first printing of the first edition. Original orange gilt cloth hardback. Original endpapers. 312 pages. In attractive condition, with some bumping and wear (see pictures).  Toning to leaves.Free of inscriptions. Binding sound and square. A nice sound copy of this scarce book.
