Every year Fender brings out a handful of special guitars for NAMM, and every once in a while one comes along that makes you stop and stare. This is one of those. Built as a 2020 Winter NAMM Limited Edition, the finish is what steals the show. The Super Faded Aged Sonic Blue lets the 2 Color Sunburst quietly peek through around the edges, almost like the blue has spent sixty years slowly giving way to the guitar underneath. I don't know who at the Custom Shop signed off on this colour, but they deserved a raise. It's one of the most tasteful relic finishes I've seen in a long time.

Underneath is everything you'd hope for from a great late '50s Strat. An alder body, maple neck with a comfortable Off Center V carve, and a trio of hand wound Fat '50s pickups that deliver all the sparkle, snap, and woody character you'd expect without ever sounding thin. The engraved Limited Edition neck plate is a nice reminder that this wasn't a catalogue guitar, and this example remains in mint condition with its original Custom Shop case, Certificate of Authenticity, and all of the original case candy. Some limited editions are memorable because they're rare. Others are memorable because they're gorgeous. This one just happens to be both.
