Charles Burgess Fry (25th
April 1872 – 7th September 1956) was an English sportsman,
teacher, writer, editor and publisher, who is best remembered for his career as
a cricketer, but was probably the most variously gifted Englishman of any age. Fry's
achievements on the sporting field included equalling the then-world record for
the long-jump in 1893, an FA Cup Final appearance for Southampton in the
1901-02 season, having helped the club win the Southern League title
during the 1900–01 season and gaining one cap for England against Ireland in
1901. Fry played rugby union for Oxford University, Blackheath and the
Barbarians, but is most famous for playing 394 first-class cricket matches for
Oxford University, Sussex and Hampshire between 1892 and 1921 and making 26
Test match appearances for England between 1896 and 1912, including 6 unbeaten
Test matches as captain in 1912 (winning 4 and drawing 2).
