1956–1964 U.S. Air Force C-130 Pilot Archive of 1st Lt. Louis A. Hudon Jr. with Original K-2B Flight Suit and Special Passport

Offered is a substantial original Cold War-era U.S. Air Force archive belonging to 1st Lieutenant Louis Alexander Hudon Jr. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Hudon enlisted in the Air Force in January 1956 and initially served overseas as an aircraft engine mechanic before entering pilot training. His records include a certificate documenting his first solo flight at Wheeler Air Force Base on January 25, 1958, and material from his graduation with USAF Pilot School Class 60-F at Reese Air Force Base in March 1960.

After receiving his commission, Hudon served with the 774th Troop Carrier Squadron at Sewart Air Force Base and was later assigned overseas to the 41st Troop Carrier Squadron at Evreux-Fauville Air Base, France. Original crew orders identify him as a C-130 co-pilot, and an included certificate records his completion of 1,000 flight hours in the Lockheed C-130 Hercules with the 41st Troop Carrier Squadron on April 2, 1963.

The centerpiece of the archive is Hudon’s original sage-green K-2B “Very Light” flying suit, retaining its period Air Training Command shoulder patch. Also included are two original 3500th Pilot Training Squadron patches, period flying gloves and personal effects, his Class 60-F “Foxtrot’s Follies” pilot-school book, graduation material, first-solo certificate, C-130 1,000-hour certificate, photographs, Lockheed Hercules ephemera, training certificates, discharge documents, correspondence, and other military paperwork.

An especially notable item is Hudon’s green United States Department of State Special Passport, issued for official government travel while he was assigned to the 41st Troop Carrier Squadron. The passport retains his photograph and contains official, service, or courtesy visas and endorsements for Pakistan, Iran, and Saudi Arabia. The archive also includes official USAF photographs bearing Incirlik Air Base, Adana, Turkey stamps dated February 1963, further documenting his overseas movements during this period.

A thick original file marked “Orders 1956–1964” and “64” contains a large quantity of special orders, temporary-duty orders, crew assignments, transfers, and separation paperwork. Only a representative selection of the orders has been photographed. Together, the records document Hudon’s progression from enlisted aircraft mechanic to commissioned C-130 transport pilot and his service in Hawaii, the continental United States, Europe, and the Middle East during the Cold War.

Also present is a smaller related group of World War II-era Army and veterans’ documents belonging to his father, Louis A. Hudon Sr. These are included with the archive but are separate from the younger Hudon’s Air Force service.

Condition varies throughout. The flight suit shows genuine period use with staining, fading, wear, and several small holes. The patches and gloves show age and handling. The paper material has varying toning, folds, creases, edge wear, tears, staple and punch holes, and occasional heavier deterioration. The pilot-school book has considerable cover wear and an abraded or darkened area. The Special Passport is used but remains intact with its photograph, visas, and official markings present.
