A beautifully produced scholarly edition of Thoreau's masterwork, distinguished by its 66 gravure photographs by Herbert W. Gleason — one of the great American landscape photographers of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The photographs have an unusual provenance: in 1906, Gleason was commissioned by Houghton Mifflin to document the places Thoreau had described in Walden, working with guidance from people who had actually known Thoreau. The landscape had changed little. Gleason became so absorbed in the project that he continued photographing "Thoreau country" for more than forty years, accumulating nearly 1,200 negatives. Most of the photographs reproduced here were selected by Gleason himself for an illustrated Walden he planned but never published. Princeton University Press finally realized that project in 1973.
The text is the CEAA-approved scholarly edition edited by J. Lyndon Shanley, accompanied by Shanley's historical introduction, Roland Wells Robbins's essay on Gleason's photography, and an analytical index by Paul O. Williams. The gravure printing process used for the photographs gives them a tonal depth and warmth that reproduces Gleason's originals with unusual fidelity.
This is the second printing (1974) of the 1973 first hardcover edition, in the slipcased quarter leather format issued by Princeton University Press.
