This is a rare antique merchantile scale, or steelyard, made and sold by J.S. Trowbridge & Company of Washington Street, Boston. The arm is made of solid cast brass with several other wrought iron hooks, loops and attachments used to work the scales. It is 17 1/2” long and weights about 4 1/2 pounds. It is stamped by the maker at the end of the brass arm, as pictured, and the arm is marked for various weights. Condition is excellent and original with no damage and no repair. It looks complete and has great old color and patina from age. The Trowbridge firm was known for making both scales and fishing tackle. I could not find a date, but this type of handmade metalwork would have disappeared by at least the mid-1800s and probably replaced with making the fishing tackle. Scales were a necessary part of everyday trade and were an important item for every merchant needing to weigh product. This was found in New England. Shipping is calculated Parcel Select mail. There is a 30 day money back inspection period, and email for more information. Thank you.
