Antique Chiyoda Optical MKA Research Microscope – c.1941 (Showa 16) – Complete Original Optics

This is an original Chiyoda Optical Industry Co., Ltd. "MKA" research microscope, manufactured around 1941 (Showa 16).

The MKA model was Chiyoda's flagship research microscope, designed for professional laboratory and scientific use. It represents one of the highest-grade Japanese microscopes produced during the early 1940s.

Serial Number: 29640

About Chiyoda Microscopes

The Chiyoda microscope was developed by the Optical Research Institute, established in 1941 by ten engineers whose goal was to improve the technology of the famous "M. Katela" microscopes.

One of their greatest achievements was the successful development of high-quality achromatic objective lenses, significantly improving the performance of Japanese optical instruments of the period.

Specifications

  • Manufacturer: Chiyoda Optical Industry Co., Ltd.
  • Model: MKA
  • Type: Research Microscope
  • Approx. Year: 1941
  • Mechanical Tube Length: 160 mm

Dimensions

  • W 17.0 cm x H 36.5 cm x D 19.8 cm (Stage Width)
  • W 13.5 cm x H 36.5 cm x D 19.8 cm (Base Width)

Weight:

  • 6.65 kg (14.66 lb)

Condition

The microscope has been professionally cleaned.

The following mechanisms operate smoothly:

  • Coarse/Fine focus
  • Mechanical stage
  • Condenser focusing
  • Iris diaphragm

All eyepieces, objective lenses, and the condenser are genuine original Chiyoda components.

No carrying/storage case is included.

Optical Features

Below the specimen stage is an NA 1.4 Aplanatic Abbe Condenser (See Photo 6).

Aplanatic indicates correction of spherical aberration and coma, providing improved optical performance.

The diaphragm includes a blue filter (See Photo 9).

Both the concave and plane mirror surfaces remain in comparatively good condition (See Photo 11).

Observation Images (See Photos 13–16 & 18)

The sample photographs were taken using:

Eyepiece:

  • 10×

Objective Lenses:

  • 10×
  • 40×
  • 90× Oil Immersion

Specimens:

  • Human placenta (H&E stain)
  • Diatom (Darkfield)

Magnifications:

  • 40×
  • 100×
  • 400×
  • 900×

Red blood cells are clearly visible.

All eyepieces and objective lenses provide clear images and are in good optical condition.

About Chiyoda Objective Lenses

Among Chiyoda's objective lenses, the 40× objective was particularly well regarded.

At the time of its introduction, the Department of Pathology at the University of Tokyo highly praised its performance, stating that it was significantly superior to conventional Japanese-made objective lenses then available.

Important Note

Many original 90× oil immersion objective lenses made by Chiyoda have deteriorated over time.

For antique microscopes, confirming that the optics still produce clear images is extremely important.

This microscope has been tested, and the optical performance has been verified through actual specimen observation shown in the listing photographs.
