The
debut novel of American writer, critic and lecturer James Dickey, who had
previously only published poetry.
Deliverance
follows four Atlanta suburbanites on a canoe trip down a remote, whitewater
river in Georgia just before it is dammed. Their weekend of supposed adventure
quickly turns into a harrowing fight for survival when they are violently
attacked by local mountain men.
The
Modern Library placed Deliverance in 42nd place on their list
of the 100 best 20th-Century novels. In 2005, the novel was included on Time
magazine's list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923.
It
was also adapted by John Boorman, using James Dickey’s own screenplay, into the
classic, award-winning film of the same name in 1972, starring Jon Voight, Burt
Reynolds, Ned Beatty, and Ronny Cox.
