One of the few known examples in copper, one of which is kept in the BnF's Medal Cabinet! Two other examples in silver are also listed. Our example comes from the Montalant Collection, sold by Jean Vinchon in December 1977 as lot 297. It is also mentioned in an article in the BSFN of June 1, 1980, p. 721. The obverse, which is very interesting, features the bust of the Ecu aux palmes of Louis XIV engraved by Joseph Roëttiers. The die used, which is worn, was intended for the mint La Rochelle. The reverse depicts Fort Louvois or Fort de Chapus (named after the rock on which it is built), which is located opposite the citadel of Château-d'Oléron. Built by Louvois in 1691 and completed in 1694 by Vauban, it was the last defensive link in the kingdom's borders and served to protect the town of Rochefort.
