Walter Piston (1894-1976) was the dean of American, Neo-Classical composers long established via Harvard University as among the most influential, traditional, advanced music teachers in America. A premier student himself of Nadia Boulanger in Paris (in the company of Aaron Copland, no less), Piston befriended and, in turn, was deeply respected by both Stravinsky and Hindemith, his life-long interlocutors. Rooted in the flinty landscapes and seascapes of his native New England, Piston's chamber music is a powerful, lyric, at times intensely chromatic set of essays all plumbing in gorgeous, melodic forms the expressive capacities of string and wind instruments, individually and via incisive ensemble playing. The great Portland String Quartet here shines in Piston's last string quartet (1962), a key part of the Quartet's celebrated survey of Piston's chamber music for strings.
