"Maurice William Crawshaw was born on 27th October 1947 in the city of Sheffield. He began his working life in the steel works but his talent for sketching and painting saw him leave Sheffield and head for Norfolk to pursue a career as a commercial artist.
It was there that he was introduced to oils and the impressionists. He studied them extensively; Monet, Manet, Renoir, Boudin, being amongst his favourites. His early works tend to favour their style and colouration.
After moving to North Wales where he now lives, he came across, by way of an old magazine, the art of candlesmoke painting. This was a Victorian pastime, used to entertain. The medium fascinated him and after years of experimenting and developing the technique, he now produces exquisite works of art using only the smoke from a candle. The ethereal quality of the smoke on glass or mother of pearl produces a stunning effect. On mother of pearl, he produces detailed miniatures that are either framed, or set in jewellery.
Both his oils, and candlesmoke works, are exhibited and collected worldwide".
