FEATURES:
Description:
The 1950s was the
decade of the creature feature. At the dawn of the Atomic Age,
American cinemas were awash with marauding aliens from outer space,
giant irradiated insects, robots on the rampage, monsters from the
depths and dinosaurs rediscovered in the modern world. The Beast
with a Million Eyes and The Beast of Hollow Mountain are two of the
most entertaining films among them, presented together in the spirit
of the science fiction double features of the 1950s.
The Beast with a Million Eyes, produced and purportedly
co-directed by the legendary Roger Corman, follows a family living
on an isolated ranch in the California desert. After an unidentified
flying object crash lands somewhere near their farm, animals and
people begin acting strangely – leading to a confrontation with a
threat not of this planet.
From a story by the legendary
special-effects artist Willis O’Brien (a mentor to Ray Harryhausen
and the animator of King Kong), The Beast of Hollow Mountain
sees a cowboy living in Mexico discover that his cattle are
being eaten by a prehistoric monster.
Representing two of the
standout science fiction cycles of the 1950s, The Beast with a
Million Eyes and The Beast of Hollow Mountain recall the era of
double-bills, drive-ins and delirious monster mayhem. Eureka
Classics is thrilled to present both films on Blu-ray for the first
time in the UK.

The Beast with a Million Eyes:
The Beast
with a Million Eyes is a 1955 independently made American
black-and-white science fiction film, produced and directed
by David Kramarsky, that stars Paul Birch, Lorna Thayer, and
Dona Cole. Some film sources have said that the film was
co-directed by Lou Place.[citation needed] The film was
co-produced by Roger Corman and Samuel Z. Arkoff. It was
released on June 15, 1955 on a double feature with King
Dinosaur, by American Releasing Corporation, which later
became American International Pictures.
Allan Kelley
and his family struggle to survive on their small date
ranch, located in the bleak California desert landscape well
away from civilization. His wife Carol hates living so far
from civilization, often taking her frustration out on their
daughter Sandra. The only bright spot in Sandra's life is
her boyfriend Larry Brewster.
After a mysterious
object, initially thought to be a plane crashes nearby, both
wild and domesticated animals begin attacking the family.
Soon, the farm's handyman (Leonard Tarver) turns on the
family, attacking them.

The Beast of Hollow Mountain:
The Beast of
Hollow Mountain is a 1956 weird west giant monster film
about an American rancher living in Mexico who discovers
that his missing cattle are being preyed upon by a dinosaur.
It was co-produced and directed by Edward Nassour, and the
screenplay was co-written by Willis O'Brien. It stars Guy
Madison, Patricia Medina and Carlos Rivas. United Artists
distributed the film in August 1956.
In southern
Mexico at the turn of the 20th century, tales are told of
cattle and farmers mysteriously disappearing. These events
occur at a location called "Hollow Mountain" where a curse
is supposed to be residing. The mountain has never been
explored and the swamp at its base is said to claim the
lives of anyone foolish enough to go to its banks. In spite
of these tales and possible perils, American cowboy Jimmy
Ryan leads his business partner Felipe and their worker
Manuel into the area one day in search of lost cattle. When
they arrive, they split up to track the cattle down. Felipe
falls into a quicksand pit at the base of the swamp and
nearly drowns but is rescued by Jimmy and his lasso. When
Manuel arrives the three spot a single drowned cattle in the
swamp. Despite Manuel believing the curse of the Hollow
Mountain to be responsible, Jimmy and Felipe remain
unconvinced. Felipe and Manuel return to Jimmy and Felipe's
cattle ranch while Jimmy goes to meet with Don Pedro, the
local town's alcalde.
