A handsome mid-century British mantel clock by Smiths Enfield, dating to approximately 1955 and recently fully serviced by Mahn & Co. The arched walnut-toned case, brass bezel, convex glass and the distinctive wood-centre dial with applied cream chapter ring give this piece a clean, quietly confident presence that sits beautifully on a mantelpiece or bookshelf. This is a clock that earns its place in a room.

The movement is almost certainly the celebrated F3A eight-day striking calibre — the workhorse of British domestic clockmaking — delivering a satisfying hour and half-hour strike on a coil gong. Wind it once a week, set it up level, and it will run reliably for years to come.

About Smiths Enfield

The story behind this clock is a distinctly British one. The Enfield Clock Company was established in 1929 in Edmonton, North London, building precision clock movements on modern assembly-line principles. In 1933, the company was acquired by the giant Smiths Industries group, and the combined "Smiths Enfield" brand name entered the catalogues from around 1950 — meaning clocks bearing this name represent the very finest years of the partnership.

During the Second World War, the factory played a vital role supplying aircraft clocks and precision instruments to the war effort. After 1945, production resumed with full vigour, and Smiths Enfield mantel clocks became a fixture in British homes throughout the late 1940s and 1950s. By the mid-1950s, production had transferred to the Smiths factory in Wales — meaning a clock dated to approximately 1955 sits right at the end of this celebrated era. By 1956, Smiths introduced floating balance movements, replacing the traditional pendulum. A pendulum clock like this one is therefore firmly within the classic 1950–1955 production window — a genuine piece of British mid-century domestic history.

Today, Smiths Enfield striking mantel clocks are widely collected for exactly these qualities: honest British craftsmanship, robust and serviceable movements, and a timeless aesthetic that has aged far better than almost anything else from the same period.

The Case & Dial

The case presents in very good order with a warm, polished walnut-toned finish and an attractive straight grain. The characteristic arched top and stepped lower body are clean and well-proportioned. The brass bezel retains a pleasing age-related patina consistent with the clock's vintage.

The dial features the distinctive wood-centre design — a warmer, more refined variation than the plain cream-dial versions — with a cream chapter ring carrying applied gilt Roman numerals, triangular quarter markers and minute dots. The Smiths Enfield signature is clearly visible at the top of the centre, and "Made in Great Britain" appears at the base of the chapter ring. The original pierced steel hands are present, including the characteristic decorative cut minute hand.

The Movement

Visible through the open rear door, the movement presents well. The brass plate, gong assembly, pendulum and bob are all original and present. The coil gong strike produces the warm, resonant tone these clocks are known for.

Servicing

This clock has been fully serviced by Mahn & Co. The movement was stripped to component level, cleaned, inspected, lubricated and bench tested. The clock is currently running and striking correctly on both the hour and half-hour.

As with all vintage mechanical clocks, we recommend allowing the clock to settle and find its beat carefully after transport before setting the time or adjusting the regulation.
