Description: SEIKO 5 - meaning 5. A brilliant marketer had an idea in the 1970s: To be a SEIKO 5 a watch needed the following five attributes (hence the name SEIKO 5): 1. Automatic 2. Water-resistant 3. Shock-resistant 4. Date and 5. Day. Note that the SEIKO 5 is actually a SEIKO 4. If the Day function is omitted the caliber 7S25 is used. The only difference from the commonly seen 7S26 is the omission of the day wheel. Reissues of the SEIKO 5 Sports often use the 7S36 caliber. The 7S36 is similar to the most popular 7S26 but features 23 jewels as opposed to the 7S26's 21 jewels. All of these movements beat at a rate of 21600 bph (beats per hour) or 6 bps (beats per second). For comparison the ETA 2824-2 beats at 28800 bph (8 bps). The Miyota 82xx beats at 21600 bph. Why mention these three movements Because they are found in perhaps 80% of all affordable automatic watches. Their market share is huge but as recently as 2006 the share of inexpensive Chinese-made automatic movements has increased. Automatic watches (also known as self-winding watches) are mechanical watches typically with a balance wheel escapement. Rather than requiring daily manual winding the mainspring is wound by the wearer's wrist movement. While quartz watches are powered by electricity mechanical watches are powered by a mainspring and require winding to keep time.
