ANGLESEY VIOLINS

This fullsize violin has the Maidstone label, a brown oval label with two dancing figures. Maidstone violins were made during 1890 to 1920s and imported into London by the company of John Murdoch. Most were made in a workshop in Bohemia (later called Czech republic) . This is a typical example of the Bohemian-made Maidstones, with its flamed maple maple back and dark walnut-coloured varnish.

The violin has two tightly-repaired cracks to the front, going up and down from the treble f hole. No other damage or repairs. (Repaired cracks to the front of a violin do not affect its sound.) Generally, the appearance is good.

I'm selling the violin in its original black pine 'coffin case'. It has strong hinges and catches, and its original felt interior. You might not want to use the case for every purposes but it should stay with the violin.

Playing qualities. The violin is set up, ready to play without further adjustment. I have played the violin briefly to check the set-up and to assess the sound. It produces a medium loudness of sound; resonant and dark-toned. It would be suitable for a beginner up to the grade 5 standard.

Scroll and pegbox. Neatly carved. The pegs are an ebony set, all adjusting correctly.

Neck and fingerboard.  Both smooth. No grooving to the ebony fingerboard.

Strings.  I have fitted a new set of good quality perlon-core strings.

Bridge. This is newly set up for the violin, by me.

Tailpiece and chinrest. The tailpiece has four fine tuners. The chinrest is a modern one.

Front of body. This is made from spruce. The purfling is inlaid.

Ribs and back. Made from flamed maple.

Condition and appearance.  There are two repaired cracks to the front, up and down from the treble f hole. Tightly repaired, they will cause no further problems. Apart from that, there is no other damage and no other repairs. The varnish has only small blemishes.

The violin will be sent in its wooden case but no bow.

Fast despatch. I can usually get items in the post on the day after receiving payment.

Just to make it clear: the violin can be posted to your house as normal or it can be sent to your nearest Argos store. Your choice.

Please send your questions.  Click on 'seller's other items' to see the range of violins I am currently selling on Ebay.

Postage to UK.  I send violins to UK addresses using Royal Mail 48. This is an insured and trackable service.  But sales to UK only.  Violins travel at my risk. I will put the tracking number onto the Ebay page

Feedback. These days I don't routinely leave feedback for buyers. But if you would like feedback posted just let me know and I will leave excellent feedback.

No postage overseas for this violin.

About me:  I took early retirement from teaching twelve years ago in order to establish my violin repair and restoration business. It had been my hobby for many years before that.  I also repair violas and cellos. I do not have a retail shop; I am self-employed, working at home. Consequently my instruments sell for much less than they would in a traditional music shop. (I do declare the income for tax!)
