Historical context: First issued in 2000 as the nation's new "Golden Dollar," the Sacagawea dollar honors the Shoshone woman who, as a teenager carrying her newborn son, helped guide the Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery across the West in 1805–06. She is the only woman depicted with her child on circulating U.S. coinage, and her image — modeled by Goodacre on a modern Shoshone-Bannock student — has become one of the most recognizable in American numismatics.
