The Garland sisters—originally known as the Gumm Sisters—were a vaudeville singing and dancing trio composed of real-life siblings Mary Jane ("Suzy"), Dorothy Virginia ("Jimmie"), and the youngest, Frances Ethel. Frances later changed her name to Judy Garland and became a legendary Hollywood superstar.
Born to vaudevillian parents, the girls started performing in the early 1920s in local venues across Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and later in California. In late 1934, they changed their act's name to "The Garland Sisters".
Shortly after, Frances adopted the iconic stage name "Judy Garland". The trio disbanded in 1935 when the eldest sister, Mary Jane, married and left the stage, paving the way for Judy to sign a solo contract with MGM.
