The Columbia pattern was specifically designed to be featured at the 
1893 World's Fair Columbian Exposition.
The Columbian Exposition was designed to mark the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s discovery of the Western Hemisphere and celebrate his landing in America.
The design shows a romanticized version of the scaly sea serpent cresting above the waves which many sailors in the time of Columbus feared.
  Over 130 years old!
