Black Sparrow Press, founded by John Martin in 1966, was Bukowski's primary publisher for his entire career and one of the most important small presses in American literary history. Each year, Black Sparrow produced these elegant greeting pamphlets featuring new work by their authors — sent to booksellers, collectors, and friends of the press. They were printed in small quantities and were never offered for general sale, making them among the more elusive pieces of Black Sparrow ephemera.
The poem — "in the morning and at night and in between" — is quintessential late Bukowski: plain-spoken, rhythmically precise, and unexpectedly resonant. The pamphlet is beautifully designed with the press's characteristic typography and a colourful bird illustration on the covers.
