late 19th to early 20th-century antique religious wood carving depicting Saint Peter. Likely originating from an Italian workshop specializing in ecclesiastical art, this piece was originally carved as the head for a full-bodied, dressed processional statue (statue vestite or santos de vestir).

The craftsmanship features traditional iconography, including the distinct "Peter’s Tonsure" (the historic forelock left at the center of the forehead) and a deeply carved, expressive curly beard. The long, rough-hewn peg neck is fully intact, showing exactly how it was designed to insert into a mannequin-style framework or church altar torso.

The head is carved from a light hardwood (likely lime or poplar), layered with a traditional gesso ground, and finished in a striking polychrome paint. It has a beautiful, soulful facial expression with a slightly upward gaze and parted lips. A small indentation on the forehead marks where a metal halo or potencias was originally pinned.

Condition Report:

This is an authentic antique fragment and is sold as-is with historical wear that adds to its character.

There is a prominent, stable vertical age crack/checking running down the right side of the face through the eye and cheek, consistent with wood shrinkage over the last century.

There are expected chips, flakes, and thinning to the polychrome paint and gesso layer, particularly on the top of the head and the edges of the beard, exposing the raw wood beneath.

The base of the neck shows standard oxidation and wear from use.
