This is a silver gelatin photograph that is mounted onto a photographer's card mount and is 11½ x 9¼ inches (294x238mm).
It shows a large crowd gathered outdoors around a tall stone obelisk monument topped with a cross. Many people in the crowd are holding open umbrellas or parasols, and wearing late Victorian clothing including bowler hats, top hats, and wide-brimmed hats. To the right of the monument, a group of men and boys in white clerical robes or surplices stand within a fenced enclosure. A sign on the enclosure fencing reads "Enclosure Reserved Main". The inscription on the monument is clearly visible and reads "In Memory of Thirty-One Kentish Martyrs who were burnt at the stake on this spot in the reign of Queen Mary A.D. 1555 - 1558". A man in dark clothing stands near the base of the monument, appearing to address the crowd. The background features trees and a wooden fence holding back further spectators.
