M833 Advanced Mathematical Methods - Open University Masters Module

A 30‑credit postgraduate module (FHEQ Level 7 / SCQF Level 11), ~300 hours of study, in the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. It teaches advanced mathematical methods with Maple — an algebraic computing language with graphics and numerical capabilities — using Maple to extend the methods, help visualise the mathematics, and combine analytic techniques with numerical methods. Topics include various forms of approximations, perturbation expansions and accelerated convergence methods, including Padé approximants, asymptotic expansions of integrals and some eigenvalue problems.

The first part teaches the use of Maple (no prior Maple knowledge expected); the rest teaches the various forms of approximation and mathematical methods. It's an option module across the OU's MSc/PG Diploma in Mathematics and Space Science qualifications, and you must study it if you wish to take the 'Advances in approximation theory' topic for your Dissertation in mathematics (M840)

The teaching is built around the set book plus OU‑produced printed course notes. You're provided with printed course notes covering the module's content, including solutions to activities and explanations to aid understanding of the concepts, skills and techniques contained in the set book. The set book itself is a two‑part set (see below), so in terms of physical printed items you have: the 2‑part set book + OU course notes.

Software: Maple (Maplesoft's computer algebra system). The Maple software is provided. The module website includes the software package Maple plus guidance on relevant computer software.
