An antique, small Bohemian Masonic firing / cannon glass with red overlay. It is profusely hand engraved with Masonic symbols and has a faceted base.
The red overlay has a slightly yellow tinge towards the top in some light. I can’t be certain of the age, but I would estimate late 19th century, (but happy to be corrected).
This example measures approx. 9.5cm high. A great collector’s item.
The ritual after the Masonic dinner, following the end of lodge proceedings, developed around wine taking. Brethren would propose toasts to the King, Craft, Grand Master, Worshipful Master, Wardens, visitors etc. Glasses would be raised, emptied and subsequently lowered and this was followed by banging on the table three times. The glasses used for this occasion became known as ‘Firing’ glasses, which were small glasses with a strong and heavy base to withstand the table banging. The sound resembled the sound of a firing cannon.
CONDITION: No chips of cracks, but there are some scratches to the red overlay consistent with age and use. Please study the photos.
