George Denholm Armour (1864-1949) was a Scottish painter, illustrator, and author born in Lanarkshire in 1864. After studying at the University of St Andrews and art schools in Edinburgh, he travelled to Tangier, Morocco, where his lifelong fascination with horses and sporting life deepened. He later settled in London, sharing a studio with illustrator Phil May, and became a regular contributor to Punch, The Graphic, and Country Life. During the First World War he served with the British Army, commanding remount depots and later receiving an OBE for his military service.

Armour's art is celebrated for its energetic and highly observant portrayal of horses, hunting, dogs, and country pursuits. Combining skilled draughtsmanship with humour and a deep understanding of animal movement, he captured the character of both his subjects and the sporting world they inhabited. His illustrations numbered in the thousands, and his paintings are now held in major British collections, including the National Galleries of Scotland and the National Trust. He remained active as an artist until his death in Wiltshire in 1949.

I have acquired a collection of works by George Denholm Armour (1864–1949), comprising landscapes, portraits, hunting scenes, and animal studies executed in pencil, ink, graphite, and chalk. Included are a number of original ink drawings produced for publication in Punch magazine.
