Author: STANFORD, Edward
Title: A Map of Australia, constructed from the Most Recent Official Documents furnished by the Surveyors General and from the Admiralty Surveys
Publication: London, Edward Stanford, 1879
Edition: First Edition
Description:
A fine, rare and impressive mammoth-format hand-coloured map of Australia on four sheets (approximately 1950 × 2620 mm when assembled), dissected into 128 sections and mounted on linen, as issued; each sheet with a title label and marbled paper mounted on the outer panels when folded (down to approximately 245 × 165 mm).
Some very faint tanning about some folds; a couple of trifling marks; linen slightly worn at some folds; essentially a near-fine copy, now housed in a cloth-covered clamshell box lettered 'Map of Australia' in gilt on the spine.
Even rarer and more impressive than Stanford's earlier 'Library Map of Australasia' (1859), this monumental map depicts the continent of Australia in great detail and on a truly vast scale.
Railway and telegraph lines are shown, as are the tracks of recent exploring expeditions such as those of Giles and Forrest.
Not in Tooley; we have identified only two examples in Australian institutional collections.
