Edo Kimekomi Doll [Pikachu]

It is said that the origin of "Kimekomi dolls" dates back to the mid-Edo period, when Shinto priests at Kyoto's Kamigamo Shrine used scraps of willow wood (the material for the willow boxes used in festivals) to create small wooden dolls. They carved grooves into the wood and then tucked leftover fabric from the priests' robes into the grooves to dress the dolls.

Even today, Mataro Dolls' Edo Kimekomi dolls are made using traditional handcrafting methods and are designated as a "Traditional Craft" by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.

From creating the clay prototype to molding, correction, and kimekomi (wood inlay) the dolls are all done by hand. The body is also made using paulownia wood powder, faithfully employing the traditional Kimekomi doll technique.

The charm of traditional crafts lies not only in their use for celebrations, good luck charms, and gifts, but also in their enriching qualities as interior decor and art.

Mataro Dolls was founded in 1919 (Taisho 8).

As the sole authorized traditional craftsman recognized by Kamigamo Shrine, the birthplace of Kimekomi dolls, we have been creating Kimekomi Hina dolls, a traditional craft that has been passed down for 270 years.

Each Edo Kimekomi doll is crafted with traditional techniques incorporated throughout.
