Very well executed and striking original charcoal drawing by the listed Edinburgh artist Charles Stiven RSA (Elect) (b. 1960), dated 1990.

Titled 'Dallas: Heart of the City', depicting Fountain Place, Dallas, Texas - the late-modernist skyscraper in downtown Dallas. With wisps of cloud floating around the colossal structure. A fine example of meticulous observation rendered in his elegant and seamless style portraying everyday objects as almost alien monoliths.

Fully signed, titled and dated on the mount. The artist has re-used a frame, as the title on the back is for another work. The final photo is for reference only.

Charcoal on heavy wove paper. In the original simple pine wood frame with single mount.

Drawing in excellent original condition - there is a curved line through the top of the building which I assume represents light reflection that can be seen in some photos of the structure (see photos). Frame in sound condition, with some very slight nicks and scratches, mount clean (see photos).

Charles Stiven RSA (Elect) b. 1960

Scottish painter, model maker and teacher.

Charles Stiven was born in Aberdeen, son of the artist Fred Stiven RSA, he graduated in Drawing & Painting at Edinburgh College of Art. Over the past 30 years his work has been shown widely throughout the UK, Europe and the USA, and is held in numerous public and private collections. He has held solo exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, New York, Bern, Gdansk, Wroclaw & Belgrade, and participated in numerous group shows including those in Berlin, Boston, St Louis, Basel, Madrid, Zurich & Seoul. He has received a variety of awards and prizes including those from IAAB Basel and the British Council and has held artists residencies in Serbia & Switzerland.

Stiven lectures in Painting at Edinburgh College of Art where he recently completed a 3 year-cycle as Programme Director of Painting. He is also Course Organiser for The Model – Making & Meaning elective course and has instigated projects with students of the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Kunste, Stuttgart and the Universitat der Kunst, Berlin. Other recent activities include conference participation in Politics & Performance, Green Park, Athens; Reading Architecture, University of Stirling and Art, Materiality & Representation, The British Museum.​

Fountain Place is a 60-story late-modernist skyscraper in downtown Dallas, Texas. Standing at a structural height of 720 ft, it is the fifth-tallest building in Dallas, and the 15th-tallest in Texas. A new 45-story sibling tower, AMLI Fountain Place, has been built to its northwest on an adjacent lot.

Original plans for the project called for twin towers, with the second tower rotated 90 degrees from the original, to be built across the garden on an adjacent lot, but with the collapse of the Texas oil, banking and real estate industry and the savings and loan scandal of the 1980s, the project was never completed.

The building was designed by the Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, Henry N. Cobb, Harry Weese Associates, and WZMH Architects, and was completed in 1986.
