What Does Josh Think

This guitar boasts a nice, spanky pickup set. But unique to this guitar is a bigger and warmer bottom end than I am used to in a Strat. Some of that might be the pickups, as the Harmonic Design 54s lean into the juicy bottom end of the earliest Strat pickups. But I believe much is due to the Nootka Cedar body. I have never player another guitar of this wood species before, but I am now a believer!

The bottom end is warm and powerful. The midrange is clear and transparent, and the top is nice and snappy without being harsh. The second tone knob is actually a blend knob that allows you to mix in the bridge pickup when in neck position, and vice versa. This gives you the ability to run just the outer pickups for a tone akin to the middle position on a Tele. Or you can choose a more subtle blend that mixes the opposite pickup to taste. Or roll with position 2 or 4 and blend in the extra pickup to have all three pickups running together!

How Does It Play

CP Thornton’s C shape is a very comfortable and classic neck profile. It’s on the beefy side but with rounded shoulders so excellent playability remains intact! I love it for how easy it is to grab chords, as well as play single note lines with finesse. The string action sits at just over 4/64” on the low E string and right at 4/64” on the high E string, measured at the 12th fret.
