Here's a very prominent 2 piece walnut Dutch cupboard circa 1830.  The top has 16 panes, 2 - 8 pane doors with old glass. Both doors have been re-glazed at some point as you can see in the pictures so I expect some panes may have been replaced. The interior of the top retains its original red wash and has 3 shelves with plate grooves, plate rails and spoon cutouts--very nice! The piece is topped with a bold crown molding above a decorative turned molding that some would call a kind of sausage turning.  I think this particular feature could be an indication or a clue to where this cupboard was made. I have seen similar cupboards from Fairfield County Ohio in the Bremen area. I mention this from experience as a possibility although I am not making a positive attribution to that locality. The 3 lipped, dovetailed drawers in the base are pleasing tiger maple above 2 raised panel doors. The cupboard rests on correct bracket feet. I find it interesting that the cupboard has the original lift off type door hinges, all in good shape. I love the turned knobs and drawer pulls. Although I haven't pictured it, I guarantee that all the backboards are original.  This is a very commanding cupboard. It's 90 inches (7 foot 6 inches) tall X 61 inches wide X 21.25 inches deep at the base. The depth of the top is 13.5 inches. The finish appears to be an older refinish that is most pleasing and ready to set into your house. In the realm of American country furniture, I am always so pleased to offer a cupboard like this at a good price. It's a tremendous value!

Bright Green Thoughts

We can apply the concept of “recycling” to reusing and salvaging fine old pieces of furniture. These are practical and well-made, regardless of style or antiquity. Look at the price and quality of vintage furniture, and then look at  newly-manufactured pieces. There is no comparison.

A vast universe of vintage  furniture already exists, and  when you buy a solid piece of reused furniture, you are saving trees and the energy needed to manufacture more stuff. Then look at the many aspects of shipping from foreign ports, with tariffs and associated costs.

You can be an Earth-friendly hero, and still save money by getting a quality piece of furniture.  Or you can buy a shoddily-made out-gassing particle-board item at a high price. Hmmm.

Then there’s the fun of the hunt for that special treasure. If it’s not a fine antique, you refinish it, doll it up with chalk paint or new pulls, and generally express your own creativity.

It seems like an easy choice to me.
