Story & Background

Offered here is a genuine early 20th century mantel clock by E. Dent & Co, from their 28 Cockspur Street premises just off Trafalgar Square. Dent produced precision clocks and scientific instruments for observatories, government offices and serious private clients. This was not a mass-market maker — Dent built instruments first, decorative objects second, and this clock has that same calm, confident “London maker” feel.

The case is a restrained arched mahogany design: elegant and architectural rather than ornate. It’s the sort of clock that would have sat happily in an office, library or study during the Edwardian / early interwar period — quietly doing its job, looking expensive without shouting about it.

Condition Notes (honest & clear)
  • Original silvered dial with age-related patina. The Roman numerals have been historically retouched at some point in its life to improve legibility. The silvered surface itself remains original and has not been stripped or refinished.
  • Mahogany case in honest antique condition with minor veneer marks and age-related wear consistent with over a century of life. Not aggressively polished or modernised.
  • Original brass bezel and glass.
Service & Performance

The movement is stamped to the rear plate: E. Dent & Co • London • 60802. It has been fully serviced, cleaned and correctly lubricated.

The original platform escapement has been carefully adjusted and regulated and now starts immediately and runs with a steady, confident beat.
