HISTORY
The Doctors' costume originated in the 17th Century and consisted of an ankle length overcoat and a bird-like beak mask often filled with sweet or strong smelling substances. The beak could hold dried flowers, herbs (commonly lavender) spices, camphor and/or a vinegar sponge. The purpose of the mask was to avoid bad smells which were thought to be the principal cause of disease and infection They believed the herbs would counter the 'evil' smells of the plague and prevent them from becoming infected.
They would also use a long, wooden cane to point out areas needing attention and to examine patients without having to touch them!

*Decoupage is the art of decorating an object by glueing coloured paper cut-outs onto the surface and combines special paint effects with gold leaf. Each layer is sealed with varnish, often multiple coats, until the 'stuck on' appearance disappears and the result looks exactly like a painting or inlay work.
Artisans have produced decorative objects using decoupage techniques in Italy since the 18th Century.
