ITEM: Original WWI Signal Corps Photo of ARTILLERY OBSERVERS WATCHING FOR EFFECT OF FIRE, 91st DIVISION, HILL 274, MEUSE-ARGONNE OFFENSIVE, September, 1918. they are using a Battery Commander's Periscope and French Long View telescope. Has note written on the back. See scans.

This original photo came from the collection of Major Ranulf Compton (1878-1974) who commanded the 327th (later designated the 345th) Tank Battalion in Patton's 304h (1st Provisional) Tank Brigade in France, 1918. Then a Captain he was key to training tank crews at the Tank School in Bourg and through all of the tank action in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensives. After Patton was wounded on the first day of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive Compton commanded the 1st Brigade's Tanks actually at the front in combat while Major Brett of the 344th Tank Battalion commanded the entire brigade from behind the lines. Compton was awarded the Purple Heart and the French Legion of Honor. After the war he served as a Republican Congressman from 1943-1945, Any cursive or script notes written in the margin or on the back are in Compton's hand. The photos I am listing from Ranulf Compton have "RC" in the title if you want to search specifically for them in my listings.
