This is a GPO Telephone No. 776 (also known as a "compact telephone"), a smaller, lighter premium/space-saving model from the late 1970s.

It looks in fantastic condition and just needs a little clean. I don't have a phone line so not able to test if it works. this model was "hardwired" but it could easily have a new style plug and lead fitted.

Key Details

  • Design: It's a compact version based on the same circuitry as the more common 746 but noticeably smaller and lighter. This allowed it to fit on shallower shelves or window ledges. It features a carrying handle on top (visible in the image) and a separate bell unit (Bell 776) connected by a long extensible curly cord.
  • Colour: Mid brown (sometimes called chocolate or light coffee) variant. The 776 was produced in brown, blue, and light grey.
  • History: Introduced around 1978 (after a 1977 silver jubilee special edition in "balmoral" blue).
  • Produced bt GEC as a modern, compact alternative to the larger 746
