Open University MST224 4-BOOK SET - 2025/26 COHORT PRESENTATION + GREAT EXTRAS
PLUS PERSONAL STUDY/REVISION EXTRAs

A current module — OU Level 2 (intermediate), 30-credit mathematics module. It teaches mathematical methods used in modelling through their application to solving real-world problems, including differential equations, linear algebra and vector calculus, mainly using pencil and paper, giving a foundation for higher-level mathematics, statistics or physics modules. It's a second-level course providing a background in mathematical methods for students studying physical sciences, engineering, mathematics and economics, teaching the 'pencil and paper' techniques at the core of applying mathematics, assuming familiarity with elementary functions, algebra, calculus and complex numbers. It starts once a year in October, will next start in October 2026, and is expected to start for the last time in October 2032. Entry requires passing either Essential Mathematics 1 (MST124) or Engineering: Mathematics, Modelling, Applications (T194), or equivalent evidence of mathematical skills.

This is the key structural fact: MST224 has 13 units, packaged into 4 printed books. The module is delivered as printed material in four books, with some optional supporting materials on the website

The 13 units are:

  1. Getting Started (84 pp)
  2. First Order Differential Equations (63 pp)
  3. Second Order Differential Equations (67 pp)
  4. Vectors & Matrices (79 pp)
  5. Linear Algebra (77 pp)
  6. Systems of Linear Differential Equations (56 pp)
  7. Functions of Several Variables (63 pp)
  8. Multiple Integrals (64 pp)
  9. Differentiating Scalar & Vector Fields (69 pp)
  10. Integrating Scalar & Vector Fields (68 pp)
  11. Fourier Series (79 pp)
  12. Partial Differential Equations (59 pp)
  13. Non-Linear Differential Equations (65 pp)
