THE 58 BARON IS WHAT ALL OTHER PERSONAL TWINS WANT TO BE WHEN THEY GROW UP!
UNLIKE THE “BABY BARON” SERIES 55, WHICH IS MOSTLY A RE-ENGINED TRAVEL-AIR FROM THE 1950’S, THE 58 BARON WAS INTRODUCED IN 1970 AS A TWIN ENGINED VERSION OF THE A-36 BONANZA, WITH SIMILAR IO-520 ENGINES TO THE A-36, AND SHARING IT’S DOUBLE AFT CABIN DOOR, 10” FUSELAGE STRETCH, REDESIGNED DASH LAYOUT AND PROVISION FOR CLUB SEATING! THE LONG NOSE WITH LARGER BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT SETS THE 58 APART AS WELL!
THIS 1974 HAS THE NEW FUEL SYSTEM, WHICH PROVIDES 166 GALLONS WITH ONLY 1 TANK PER SIDE, SO NO COMPLICATED FUEL SWITCHING IN FLIGHT!
OTHER IMPROVEMENTS FOR 1974 INCLUDE THE NEW STYLE WINGTIPS WITH WRAP AROUND CLEAR COVERS OVER THE POWERFUL STROBES AND NAV LIGHTS!
THE PAINT SCHEME IS AWESOME, IN SILVER, GREY, BLACK RED AND BLUE!
ALTHOUGH NOT RECENT, THE SCHEME AND COLORS GIVE THIS AIRPLANE REAL RAMP PRESENCE!

THE INTERIOR IS TOP NOTCH, A THING OF BEAUTY!
EQUIPPED WITH RADAR, 3 AXIS AUTOPILOT WITH HSI AND FLIGHT DIRECTOR AND OPTIONAL YAW DAMPNER!
FULLY DEICED, INCLUDING WINDSHIELD SPRAY BAR AND PROPS, BOOTS LOOK GOOD!
V.G.’S FOR BETTER LOW SPEED CONTROL!
BUT EVEN A GOOD LOOKING PLANE WITH GOOD AUTOPILOT AND A FANTASTIC INTERIOR COULDN’T SAVE THE AIRPLANE FROM LANDING WITH THE GEAR UP!
THE PILOT REPORTED AFTERWARD THAT IT WAS DUE TO AN ELECTRICAL FAULT, WHICH IS USUALLY CODE FOR “I FORGOT BUT DON’T WANT TO ADMIT IT”! (I WASN’T THERE, SO I DON’T KNOW).
NO DAMAGE WAS SUSTAINED TO THE GEAR THEMSELVES, BUT THE CRANE COMPANY THAT PICKED THE AIRPLANE UP OFF THE RUNWAY DIDN’T KNOW MUCH ABOUT AIRPLANES!
THEY USED NICE WIDE STRAPS, SO THAT IS GOOD, AND THEY DIDN’T WRAP AROUND THE LEADING EDGE OF THE WINGS AND THE FLAPS (WHICH DAMAGES THE WINGS AND THE FLAPS!), BUT THEIR FRONT STRAP WAS AROUND THE NOSE GEAR DOORS, SO WHEN THEY GOT IT TO A PARKING SPOT AND A MECHANIC CRANKED THE EMERGENCY GEAR HANDLE, THE MAINS CAME OUT FINE, AS EXPECTED, BUT THE NOSE WAS UNABLE, BECAUSE OF THE STRAP HOLDING THE DOORS CLOSED, SO THE NOSE ACTUATING ARM BENT INSTEAD! NOT VERY PROFESSIONAL!
AS THE GEAR COULDN’T COME OUT DUE TO THE STRAPS, THE CRANE JUST LOWERED THE AIRPLANE CAREFULLY ONTO A TIRE UNDER THE NOSE FOR PADDING AND LEFT IT LIKE THAT, AS SHOWN!
THE ONLY DAMAGE TO THE NOSE GEAR IS TO THAT FORWARD ACTUATING ROD, NOT TO THE TRUNION OR MOUNT!
THERE IS ALSO NO DAMAGE TO THE NOSECONE, FROM THE GEAR UP OR FROM THE RECOVERY! THERE IS SCRAPING TO THE BELLY SKINS AND REINFORCING STRUCTURE FROM THE CONTACT WITH THE RUNWAY, FROM AFT OF THE NOSE GEAR DOORS TO ABOUT MID CABIN.
THE TAILCONE AND TAIL FEATHERS ARE UNDAMAGED.
THE DAMAGE IS TO THE MID BELLY ONLY, NOT UP THE SIDES, SO PAINT TOUCH UP WILL BE EASY AFTER REPAIR!
THE STEP IS SCRAPED, OF COURSE, AND SEVERAL BELLY MOUNTED ANTENNA, LIKE THE ADF, SACRIFICED THEMSELVES TO KEEP THE BELLY SKINS FROM SCRAPING WORSE!
BOTH FLAPS ARE VERY SCRAPED, BUT NO DAMAGE TO THE WINGS, AILERONS OR TIPS!!
AS THE GEAR WAS ALL FULLY UP, THERE IS NO DAMAGED TO THE INNER OR OUTER DOORS ON THE MAIN GEAR AND NO ACTUATOR OR GEARBOX ISSUES ON THE MAINS.
IN ADDITION TO THE FANCY AUTOPILOT SYSTEM WITH YAW DAMPER, THIS AIRCRAFT IS EQUIPPED WITH THE FOLLOWING AVIONICS:
