Offered for consideration is a tangible piece of Masonic heritage: an original letter dispatched in 1965 from Humboldt Lodge, Number 359, Free and Accepted Masons, to their brethren at Teutonia Lodge, Number 367, both of Pennsylvania. Dated April 21st, this missive provides a direct connection to the fraternal bonds of the mid-20th century.
The letter is presented on delicately aged, cream-colored paper, lending it an air of historical significance. The Humboldt Lodge's emblem is proudly emblazoned at the top, accompanied by information regarding their regular communications: the first Wednesday of each month at the Norman Hall. Above the emblem, the inscription "Constituted March 1, 1866" marks the lodge's founding, a testament to its enduring legacy.
Originating from North Wilson Grove, PA, the letter was composed by the Lodge Secretary, August C. Christiansen. It is formally addressed to the Worshipful Master of Teutonia Lodge No. 367, a Mr. William P. Wollenhaupt, and bears an invitation from Humboldt Lodge's own Worshipful Master, Frederick D. Klinger. The purpose? To cordially invite Mr. Wollenhaupt and his wife to Humboldt Lodge's Johannesfest, to be held on May 15th, 1965, within the halls of the Cannstatter House, a venue known for German cultural celebrations. An inscription in hand extends this invitation to additional members of Teutonia Lodge, noting a fee of $7.00 per attendee for the day's festivities. Christiansen concludes with a "Fraternally" and a typed representation of his signature.
Turning to the reverse of the letter, as shown in the accompanying images, one finds a blank canvas marked only by subtle imperfections â perhaps tiny flecks from the printing process or simply the gentle accumulation of years. Clear creases from its folding for postal delivery speak to its journey through time and space, further attesting to its genuine origin. The consistent, off-white tone across the paperâÂÂs surface only emphasizes its age and historical context.
