Description

The Orchard gallery is pleased to be able to offer a lovely collection of paintings and drawings by the Northern artist John Gilbey Bowles 1929-2011. Each work being offered is a visual feast of colour, composition and emotion. Bowles won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art at a young age. His drive to convey a new visual language caught the attention of L S Lowry and he helped him to get his first major exhibition in 1965 and they became lifelong friends. Throughout his career he developed other friendships with other major British 20th century artists.

This is a stunning portrait of an old man after the artist Vincent Van Gogh. It is executed in oil on unstretched canvas and measures 17x13 inches and comes unframed. It is signed in the top left corner and on the back it states it was painted when the artist was 17 which dates this work to 1946. In the right frame this will grace any art collection. There is a small area of paint loss in the top right corner but it does detract from this great piece of art.
