This real photo postcard shows Whitecliff Bay on the Isle of Wight circa 1935, with a long row of bathing tents along the shoreline and figures on the beach. Visible in the bay is the beached bow section of HMS P-12, a Royal Navy patrol boat cut in two by collision with the oil tanker Emmanuel Noble off Culver Cliff on 4 November 1918 — seven days before Armistice. The forward section was towed inshore and beached at Whitecliff Bay, where it remained as a landmark for many years. AB James Ernest Bright of Sacriston, County Durham was lost in the collision.
The card is unused. Publisher unknown. Series number 852 — we believe this card dates to circa 1935 based on an identical format companion card posted in August of that year, also of Whitecliff Bay, which we have listed separately.
