Description

Leitz Michelson & Mirau Interferometer Attachments for Microscope

This is a rare set of Leitz Michelson and Mirau interferometer attachments, believed to have been manufactured in the 1960s.

These attachments are accessories used with reflected-light polarizing microscopes.

The set includes two types of interferometer attachments: a Michelson interferometer attachment and a Mirau interferometer attachment.

The attachments and objective lenses have no known functional issues. The optical system also appears to be clean.

Interferometer Attachments

Two Leitz interferometer attachments are included.
Please see Photo 3.

  • Left side: Michelson interferometer attachment
  • Right side: Mirau interferometer attachment

These interferometer attachments are mounted onto the Leitz RMS-thread objective lenses.

Objective Lens Mounting

The objective lenses are installed into the objective clutch / objective holder of a polarizing microscope.
Please see Photos 6 to 8.

The included 20x and 32x objective lenses use the standard RMS screw thread, so they may also be compatible with certain non-Leitz polarizing microscopes that accept RMS-thread objectives.

Michelson Interferometer Attachment

The Michelson interferometer attachment is used with the specified 20x reflected-light objective lens.

A disassembled view of the Michelson interferometer attachment is shown in Photo 12.

When the black gear-like dial on the surface of the Michelson interferometer is rotated, three dark circular shadows appear on the specimen image. This helps the user locate interference fringes more easily.
Please see Photo 16.

Mirau Interferometer Attachment

The Mirau interferometer attachment is used with the specified 20x and 32x reflected-light objective lenses.

A disassembled view of the Mirau interferometer attachment is shown in Photo 13.

The Mirau interferometer includes six different inserts.
Please see Photo 15.

The appropriate insert is installed into the attachment depending on the observation purpose.

Usage Example

The photos show the Michelson interferometer mounted on a Leitz Orthoplan POL polarizing microscope.
Please see Photo 18.

Please note that the microscope itself is not included in this listing. It is shown only as a usage example.

Interference Fringe Example

An example image shows interference fringes appearing on the reflective surface of a CD.
Please see Photo 19.

Even a surface that appears flat like a mirror can show interference fringes if there are scratches, dents, or uneven areas.

By measuring the spacing between the interference fringes, shown by the yellow arrow in the photo, it may be possible to estimate the depth or height of scratches, dents, or surface irregularities.

I remember that this type of microscope system could measure surface unevenness at the level of several tens of nanometers. However, I am not an expert in the exact operation of this equipment, so please review the photos carefully and use your own technical knowledge before purchasing.

Condition

The interferometer attachments and objective lenses are in good stored condition.

There are no known functional issues with the attachments or objective lenses.

The optical system appears to be clean.

Please check all photos carefully for the exact condition and included items.

Important Note

These Leitz interferometer attachments are used by mounting them onto Leitz RMS-thread objective lenses.

When observing with a polarizing microscope, the use of a vibration-isolated table is recommended.

Both interferometer attachments are rare items and have been kept in good storage condition.

This is a highly specialized vintage Leitz microscope accessory set, suitable for collectors, researchers, or users of classic Leitz microscope systems.
