One of the scarcest of the Studio Vista Blues Paperbacks series of books, which were published across 1970-1971 under the editorship of the leading blues historian Paul Oliver.

A short but highly influential study of the Delta blues musician Charley Patton, which approaches Patton from a musician’s, rather than an historian’s, point of view.

The book mixes biography, discography and musical interpretation, with an emphasis on Patton’s guitar technique and rhythmic style. With narrative sketch of Patton’s life, analysis of recordings, commentary on musical style and phrasing, and early blues discography information.

The writer, John Fahey, was himself an accomplished American fingerstyle guitar, who recorded many albums from the 60s right through to his death in 2001. The genesis of this book was in Fahey’s MA thesis when studying at UCLA.
