Vintage ceramic Spanish “Caganer” figurine, a traditional piece used in Catalan Christmas nativity scenes.

This hand-painted figure shows a smiling man wearing a red hat (called a barretina) and rustic clothing. Like all classic Caganers, he’s depicted in the traditional squatting pose with pants down — a well-known and long-standing part of Spanish holiday culture.

In Catalonia, these figures are actually hidden somewhere in nativity displays (usually off to the side or behind buildings), and people have fun trying to spot them. The tradition goes back a few hundred years and is said to symbolize good luck, prosperity, and fertilizing the earth for the coming year.
