We are listing a lovely authentic example of a1930s English Art Deco glass fruit bowl and/or seven piece dessert set.
It was made by one of England's premier glass manufacturers of the period, Sowerby in their Ellison Glass Works, in Gateshead, in the north-east of England. Sets like this capture the optimistic, flamboyant mood of the 1930s Art Deco period with its bright colours and attractive geometric shapes and was affordable for hard-pressed middle and working glass families.
This set is part of the 'Manchester Suite' range and like most art glass, this set responds attractively to light, appearing as a vivid, almost fluorescent green in bright daylight. Please note, however, they are not fashioned out of uranium glass (i.e. they don't glow under UV).
It comprises a gorgeous rectangular bowl, catalogued as a fruit bowl (L2487) in 1937 which has a diamond pressed glass patter, with a quality star decoration on the base. It is accompanied by six matching smaller bowls. Thus it has two uses; it can be used as a free standing fruit bowl or as a seven piece dessert serving set.
This set is a delightful Mid 20th Century survivor and it is amazing to think that it's not many years away from achieving official antique status. It's always wonderful to come across rare period glassware like this in such condition and still surviving as a complete set; glass gets damaged and broken over the decades, so much so that you'll usually find individual pieces from sets like this being sold separately.
Condition
It has been robustly manufactured and in spite of being nearly 90 years old, it is in very good condition i.e. no chips or cracks or even the usual nibbles around the edges often found with popular art glass from this period.
