RIVINGTON, James (printer). Rivington’s New-York Gazetteer; or, the
Connecticut, Hudson’s River, New-Jersey, and Quebec Weekly Advertiser.
New York: Printed by James Rivington, facing the Coffee-House Bridge.
Folio (approx. 15 x 19 in.). Colonial American newspaper printed on laid rag
paper in multiple columns with engraved ship masthead. A pre-Revolutionary New
York issue published in the tense months following the Boston Tea Party and
prior to the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War.
Content includes commercial and maritime notices, indigo trade advertising,
and period advertisements reflecting colonial economic and social life, notably
an enslaved-person sale notice and various mercantile announcements. Such
material provides valuable primary-source insight into transatlantic commerce
and everyday life in British North America.
An authentic example of a Loyalist-associated New York newspaper printed by
James Rivington, whose publications occupy an important place in
Revolutionary-era print culture and collecting.
