HK-296, struck to celebrate the 1902 Semicentennial of Wells Fargo & Company. Choice Uncirculated, certified NGC MS-64. Not as dark as many copies so it was likely removed from the original case fairly quickly. The flocked paper cases typically toned pieces very heavily. Attractive light matte Silver colored surfaces with minimal marks, the only one of note a minor rim bruise visible on the Obverse side. Original designer of the dies and who struck these unknown for many years. The work had always suggested Tiffany's of New York to me, however new research by has revealed that the design was created by John J. Valentine, President of Wells Fargo & Co., and the medals were struck by Shreve & Company of San Francisco (per Jeff Shevlin). Total number struck also unknown to any certainly, however almost certain to be in the low thousands originally, based upon the standard that a medal was presented to each employee of at least one year's service. However, the vast majority likely melted or lost over the years as only less than approx. 300 certified (272 at NGC + PCGS). For comps, Goldberg recently sold a NGC MS-63 at $2,100, with Heritage selling an MS-64 with similar lighter surfaces at $2,400 August, 2024 – my pricing accounts for these results, as well as my (ridiculous) ebay fees. Always popular with So Called Dollar collectors, as well as those of Old West collectibles including U. S. Gold coins due to the banking connection. Note: the case shows some light scuffing, however no damage. Please note that due to value this will require shipping with Signature Confirmation, hence the S&H shown. Due to recent problems with the USPS, this includes Insurance, to protect both parties to the sale - if you don't like the cost, write your Congressman ...
The Boilerplate (read at your option, but it helps):
NO AI. I write my own descriptions and know what I am talking about – unlike a lot of ebay “dealers” who use the tech to give you a description that blathers on and says NOTHING about whatever they happen to be selling.
Actual item shown. All raw (uncertified) coins are guaranteed genuine, in perpetuity, backed by our firm’s 80+ years in the business, plus all the industry “garden salad” (PCGS, CAC, NGC, ANACS, ANA, etc., etc.). Grades stated for uncertified coins are based upon my 35+ years experience and are typically based upon those used by PCGS. However no actual specific “number” can be guaranteed should a coin be submitted for grading by any service, as their standards are based upon market rather than technical grading, and even they do not necessarily agree (which is why CAC exists).
Grading is one thing – a customer’s opinion of quality is another and may differ from my own. Unlike many other dealers I understand this reality. For that reason I have no problem with accepting a return within the listed return period, for which I pay. If you have an issue for any reason with anything you purchase from me, feel free to contact me to work out a reasonable solution for both of us.
I am happy to combine shipping for multiple items, typically by refunding the excess after shipping. Ebay has made it too difficult to combine shipping prior to payment due to policy changes regarding non-paying buyers.
